I am from Taiwan and normally the service here is great. It is great because customer is always right and if the store provide people with bad service, their bad reputation will spread on the internet so they have to be very careful and sensitive to customers' needs. We have a Chinese saying, "花錢的是老大", meaning "whoever spends the money is the boss". Therefore, the customer has the absolute right to be unreasonable unless they have caused trouble in the store that affect other customers. I noticed although there are certain ways to sound polite in the US, the customer can still be wrong and sometimes the problem might not be fixed. However, both countries uses polite sentences while serving customers.
My imaginery scene:
Waitress (w): Good afternoon, my name is Angie and I will be your waitress this evening. Would you like to start with an appetizer or a drink?
Customer (c): No, thank you.
w: No problem, I will give you some time to look over the menu. Please ask for me if you need anything.
5 minutes later
w: What would you like to have today?
c: Burger with fries on the side,...
w: Sounds lovely, I will put your order in the kitchen.
when the customers seems full
w: Can I take the plates out of your way or are you still working on it?
c: Please take it away.
w: Are there any room for dessert?
c: No.
w: No problem, will this be on one check or seperate?
c: One.
w: Thank you, I will be right back with your check.
Later
w: Thank you for coming in xxxx restaurant today, I hope to see you again soon.
